THE CORNISH ADDER PROJECT
The Cornish Adder Project is an investigation into the population genetics of Vipera berus at a long term monitoring site in Cornwall. Research into V. berus genetics within Cornwall is currently lacking, and can inform population ecology research.

We are undertaking microsatellite DNA analysis to conclusively identify individuals, along with the genetic diversity within the population. Ventral scale clippings of V. berus from photo-mark-recapture efforts are kept, analysed and sequenced, and data collated in an ongoing
collated in an ongoing genetics bank. This research is vital due to the recent habitat fragmentation that has occurred at the site. Continued monitoring of the site will indicate the impact this change is having on the population, along with helping to inform future conservation management. The project is in association with the Cornwall Reptile and Amphibian Group (CRAG).

We are keen to expand our research to include samples from all around the county and would love to hear from you if you are currently monitoring adder populations. However, we discourage disturbance of adders unless absolutely necessary for a clearly defined conservation objective.
